Getting Ready for Mosquito Season in Texas this Winter
We hear the same thing every year: Won’t this cold weather kill off all the mosquitoes??
The simple answer is no. We’ve been covering mosquito control here in the Spring, Woodlands, Conroe and Magnolia area for more than 30 years and trust us; they aren’t going away because of the cold. The best we can do is to prepare for the upcoming season now.
Gone are the days of complete neighborhoods getting sprayed being effective to enjoy your backyard. Targeted sprays for parks and community gathering areas and neutralization of breeding sites are the new more effective applications.
The real question is what can you do?
The Bad News: Mosquitoes can lay 100-200 eggs in only an inch of water and need little more for those eggs to survive to larvae and emerge as blood sucking adults.
The Good News: This is preventable!
Here are 3 simple steps you can take to make this Spring and Summer mosquito free!
1. Take a walk around your property and make note of any standing water and address them by either installing French drains or other water drainage devices and/or raise the soil level with a sand and top soil mixture.
2. Remove any dense vegetation below 6 feet around your property. Dense brush and heavy vegetation around your property are harborage areas for adult mosquitoes and removing them gives less areas for them to breed, rest and wait for an unsuspecting meal to walk by.
3. Contact your home owners association or property management group and make sure they are taking active steps to treat drainage sites and retention ponds with effective preventative treatments. Most of these treatments are very affordable and do not require chemicals. This can naturally prevent larvae from reaching adulthood.
